How does Missouri define what an electric bike is?

Missouri designates three classes of electric bicycles:

Class 1: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 20 mph.

Class 2: Bicycle equipped with a throttle-actuated motor, that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 20 mph.

Class 3: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the electric bicycle reaches 28 mph. 

Do you need a license, insurance or registration in Missouri?

Electric bicycles are not subject to the registration, licensing, or insurance requirements that apply to motor vehicles

What are the restrictions on Motor power or throttle in Missouri?

The state of Missouri (MO) defines electric bikes must be equipped with a motor of less than 750W.

Are there any age restrictions to riding an electric bike in Missouri?

There are no age restrictions for the use of electric bikes in the state of Missouri.

What are the laws around helmets in Missouri?

Helmets are required for all electric bike riders.

What are the rules for riding on the road in Missouri?

Electric bicycles may be ridden on roadways where the posted speed limit is less than the traveling speed of the device. Riders must remain as far right as practical, except when making a left hand turn. Electric bicyclists may ride abreast when not impeding other vehicles. No person shall ride a motorized bicycle upon a sidewalk.

Additional notes: 

  • Every electric bike should be equipped with a brake or brakes which will enable its driver to stop the bicycle within 25 feet from a speed of 10 mph on dry, level, clean pavement.
  • Every electric bicycle when in use on a street or highway during the period from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise shall be equipped with a front-facing lamp, a rear-facing red reflector, reflective material and/or lights visible from the front and the rear on any moving part of the bicyclist: and reflective material and/or lights visible on each side of the bicycle or bicyclist visible at night under normal atmospheric conditions on a straight, level, unlighted roadway.
