In today’s installment of the 3 Minute Electric Bike Video Series where we are demystifying electric bikes we will be talking about how to increase the range of your e-bike’s battery. There are a number of things that you can do that can really change how far you can go on a single charge.
First is to pedal when you are starting out from a stop. This where it requires lots of energy to get going and if you share that load, with the motor, you are going to put less load on your battery. If you want to stop pedaling to rest for a while, the best time to do that is when you are cruising. Sit back and relax while you cruise at 12-18mph. However, when you come to a hill for example, you should start pedaling again. Any amount of effort from the rider will really make a difference on the draining of the battery. It takes a lot of energy to get up hill as we all know and if you put all that responsibility on your electrical system, that’s going to drain your battery quickly.
Hard acceleration is another place you can unnecessarily use too much energy from the battery, so start up slowly, move up to cruising speed gradually and you are going to get better mileage out of your battery.
Keep up with the maintenance of your bike. You want to make sure that the brakes are properly adjusted so they are not rubbing. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, and typically to the higher end of the spectrum is going to get you a better rolling resistance and then you’ll be able to cruise down the road better.
If your bike is equipped with a read outs display panel, pay attention to those, it can really help you to understand when you are using the most electricity from your battery in any given situation.
Lastly, I will just say, keep track of how altering your behavior affects your range per charge and it takes a little bit to learn how to use your bike so that you can get the most out of it, but quick notes at the end of the ride will help you go pretty far.
