Kentucky State Electric Bike Laws, Definition & Legal Operation

 

Definition of Electric Bike:

The state of Kentucky (KY) defines electric bikes as “mopeds.” An electric bike may or may not have have pedals, may not exceed 50 cc and does not require clutching by the operator and may not exceed 30mph.

Licensing and Registration:

The state of Kentucky does not have any licensing or registration requirements for electric bikes.

Helmet Law:

Any person under the age of 21 must wear a helmet.

Where to Ride:

Electric bikes must be operated on the roadways where the posted speed limit is less than the maximum output of the motorized device.
